Shade of a Shadow

2018 – 2020, Splashes of glass colors / Drawing with carbon paper on layers of silk paper.

Shade of a Shadow is a memory that emerges from faded childhood photos and a father's letters, phrased in poetic and archaic language, written in a barely legible scribble. The attempt to hold on to an elusive memory is destined to fail. Fragments of visual memories, spoken words and transient events are interwoven in a manner that renders it impossible to untangle or define. That which we cling to is elusive and operates as a hidden codex. Or perhaps, the attempt here is simply to let go, blur the image and allow the memory to slip away.  How is the archive of personal memories constructed? How is it classified? How can we organize and sift through it? Is it even possible? Snippets of information, details and hints contained within family photos, letters and documents were processed throughout the creative work in order to construct a personal and family identity, forever fragmented.

Each piece, made of silk paper, is placed one next to the other, together creating a whole. They were made by hand by repeatedly duplicating an image. Two techniques were utilized; the first was a drawing on paper with carbon paper underneath, the second used paint applied to paper which then bled through to the layers below. The pages were bound together into notebooks, partially transparent leaving an obscure image.

The works were displayed at a solo exhibition entitled Shade of a Shadow at the Tel-Aviv Artspace gallery in 2020. The exhibition combined new work as well as earlier pieces from the series Words Works [presented on the website in a separate category).
