Waiting

2008, Sewn inner tubing filled with sand, 80 cm height

The works Waiting and Residue were inspired by the human body’s organs. They are handmade, yet make use of materials with an industrial charge. Waiting is based on inner tubing, whose form was replicated and sewn with a shoemaker’s string and needle, and then filled with sand. Residue is composed of simple materials including a transparency and plasticine, yet creates the illusion of being made of metal with touches of rust. In contrast to a living, breathing, moving organism, these works have a heavy, static quality associated with waiting. These nearly opaque containers each have a single, narrow aperture leading outwards.
